Hebe Lee Wiseman

Born in Alexandria, Virginia in 1946, throughout her younger years, art seemed to be the only subject that could command Hebe's full attention. This was due in part to having seen paint brushes and smelled turpentine for as long as she could remember, along with wonderful memories of watching her mother paint murals on the walls of the pediatrician's office, as well as paint the finest details on a piece of jewelry.

As a young woman, Hebe spent three years in and around the cities of Rome, Naples, Florence and Venice. This is where her love of art really began to grow as a result of being surrounded by beautiful masterpieces. After returning to her home in Arlington, Virginia, she began studying the fine art of china painting with her mother, Margaret Surber. Mrs. Surber was a master china painter who also worked in watercolor and oils.

Hebe spent the next twenty years teaching china painting classes in her home. In 1980, she began working for world-renowned artist, P. Buckley Moss where she developed an interest in graphic arts. Pursuing a career in the graphics art field, she went on to become a computer graphics specialist. Ms. Wiseman has also worked as production manager for several companies. Although the contracting world presented many new challenges, her desire to paint never diminished.

As a result, Hebe has returned to her love of china painting and a world of miniature art. She loves to paint with great detail and spends many hours with brush in hand, looking through a magnifying glass to render the finest of strokes.

Many of her paintings come from photographs taken while exploring the beautiful countryside, and her own backyard. There are some taken from old postcards and studies of her mother's vast collection with subtle changes from the original paintings.

Hebe Lee Wiseman, mother of three and grandmother of four, now resides in Harper's Ferry, West Virginia.
