When the artist lived in northern Alabama in the 1980's, she was invited to exhibit two pieces in the Washington, DC office of her Alabama Congressman, Ronnie Flippo. She had a graphite montage of scenes in Rogersville, one of towns in the Congressman's district - and wanted to add something suitable in color. "This Fair Land" was displayed there for almost a year and then returned to the artist. The reference for this was a black and white photo in the Dover Pictorial Archive Series (copyright-free illustrations may be used, free and without special permission). That edition had several pictures of the first "Sam," the American Bald Eagle done by photographer, Arthur H. Fisher, in 1940 at the Washington Zoo. (Another eagle named "Sam," died at the Zoo in 2011.)
