A native Kansan, Jean Cook grew up on the family farm helping with harvests and caring for the family cows, sheep and horses. Her artwork is inspired by her real-life experiences showing horses, working cattle drives and traveling to unusual locations around the world. She worked for Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO for 34 years, 21 of those 34 years as an artist engraver.  The skills learned as a sculpting artist can be seen in her work.  Basically a self-taught artist, Jean has studied with many well known artists around the US and the Kansas City Art Institute.  Her paintings reflect an emphasis on the use of color, light and shadow to create depth and are inspired by her real-life experiences showing horses, working on cattle drives and traveling to unusual locations around the world.  The results of these travels are a large body of research photos which are used regularly in her work.

Ms. Cook has been accepted into the prestigious Arts for the Parks in Jackson, WY four times and in 2001 was in the top 100 from over 2100 entries.  She has won numerous awards in juried shows around the country including six (6) Best of Shows and numerous 1st Place awards.  She was among the 250 finalists with over 13,000 entries in the Artist's Magazine annual competition in 2004.  In 2007 she had a painting selected to hang in the new Overland Park Community Center in Overland Park, KS.

Jean gives workshops and teaches oil/acrylic painting in the Kansas City and Paola areas.  She also works with Kansas City Young Audiences teaching art in the KC area school systems. She is an active member in the following: AAEA Associate, Society of Animal Artists Associate Miniature Painter, Sculptors, Gravers Society of Washington, DC, Heartland Art Guild in Paola, KS.
