Conifers as a species are three times older than flowering plants. For this reason, they symbolize human enlightenment, sometimes called the third eye. Our pineal gland is a pine cone shaped gland in the center of every human brain. It controls how we perceive light. It controls our circadian rhythm and our wake-sleep patterns. It is only second to our kidneys in having the most blood flowing through it. Many cultures consider it the link to our soul. We are all human. Male, female, Roman, Indian, Polish, Greek… we all have our burdens to carry, our triumphs to celebrate, our arts and culture to promote. We are all Homo sapiens. Even if we were all the same culture, even if we all grew up in the very same pueblo, we’d still have differences. That’s the point. Every human is unique. If you go far enough down that anti-diversity path, you have to eliminate everyone on the earth but yourself. You are the only one on the planet with your attributes. So why do humans always pick a team? Why do we need to be with people who embrace the same sports team, the same political party, the same stance on civil rights and social issues? It’s because humans are social creatures. This is what I was contemplating when I painted this piece. Humans are programmed to be social and find others who are just like us. Yet we are each unique, so we can never find anyone exactly like us. For me, that’s where most comedy stems from. So when I saw these starfish on a sunny mantle, they made me laugh. Is it just me? Or does the thought of a starry day make you laugh too? Okay. It’s maybe just me and I’m weird. These flowers are always suspiciously healthy. No matter what time of the growing season I visit, they are flourishing. No rabbits or deer or chipmunks have nibbled on them. Nobody forgets to water them. No caterpillars or gypsy moths have bitten holes in the leaves. I’m suspicious. I think these may be coming fresh from the garden center every week. But they do make me feel welcome and they do put a smile in my heart. The painting by Willem van Aelst that inspired this piece caught my eye because of its patriotic (for Americans) colors in the flowers. But it was the seashell at the bottom of the vase that inspired me. It’s just a little detail, and not even a very important part of the composition. Yet it got me to look closer, and think about why it was there. Then I saw the “face” of a live snail in it and that made me smile. Aelst loved to paint flies and and other realities into his paintings and they always make me happy to look at. For my painting, although I do enjoy looking at caterpillars and ants and such, I don’t think I’d want to hang them on my wall. He’s the reason I bought close range binoculars for visiting museum exhibitions. The guards at the National Gallery of Art are very patient with me, but I made them so nervous, because the Chardin paintings draw you in. He painted in layers of glorious color, and I swear the paintings were never in any danger of being damaged by me. But I can’t look at his works without leaning in and trying to discern all of the beautiful nuances of his greens and yellows and reds. He didn’t use much blue at all, but that was a very expensive pigment. I often wonder how he would paint if he had the blues and purples we have access to today.\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"\"\u003eIt’s hard to choose a favorite Chardin still life, but one of my favorite snacks is pears and peanuts. So there you go. My stomach danced the whole time I was working on this painting, knowing it would get to digest the props after! He is famous for experimenting with perspective. He tilted baskets and let clothes fall off the table edges, and composed things in such a way that they look “lived in.” The apples appear to have just rolled into place before he picked up his brush to paint them. I grew up with Little Debbie products, and of course there was always a reference to my name being Debbie. I used graham crackers in my stack, because those are fun and yummy too. It is amazing to me, watching the earth literally reclaim all the minerals and equipment that comprise the vessel. This was the scene in May of 2021. North American osprey populations, along with that of many of our other great birds of prey, were threatened by extinction. He went with some 20 men to see Charles Eden, the Governor of  North Carolina and\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e accepted a pardon. For awhile, Blackbeard lived there as a retiree. But then he approached Eden, with a plan to resume pirating and share the loot in exchange for protection. That is exactly what he did until his fatal day, November 22, 1718 when \u003c\/span\u003eVirginia Governor Alexander Spotswood sent British naval Lieutenant Robert Maynard, track down Blackbeard off the coast of  Ocracoke Island.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"faso-user-p\"\u003e Blackbeard's ship, The Adventure, had cannon and Maynard had to approach in a sloop. But he outwitted the pirate by going under deck after the first cannon volley. Seeing that the decks were clear, Blackbeard thought that his cannons had done their job, and he boarded Maynard's vessel along with his crew, to commence the looting. As soon as Blackbeard was aboard, the pilot signaled Maynard. Maynard and 12 of his men rushed to the main deck, catching the pirates off guard. During the six-minute sword and gun fight that followed, Blackbeard was killed and his men were all wounded. Sir John Colington used the grant to set up a plantation in 1664. He had cattle brought over by boat to graze on the scrubby marsh grasses. He had houses and barns erected, and corn planted. Its intricate bogs and creeks were easy to hide in, and the fresh fruit and fish and waterfowl kept bellies full. If people on the wrecks were still alive, they were helped and healed by the settlers. A huge storm flooded the city's boardwalk and Bradley's shelves of taffy were a soggy mess. As the story goes, Bradley was cleaning up when a young girl asked him if his taffy was for sale. He replied jokingly that she could help herself to some \"salt water taffy.\" David's mother heard the exchange and loved the name. She began a marketing campaign, and they sold the first salt water taffy on the eastern seaboard.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"faso-user-p\"\u003e A man named Joseph Fralinger adjusted the recipe and turned it into a product you can bring home from the beach. He found a way to box the candy and sell it, making salt water taffy a popular souvenir for tourists.
