Joyce Rowsell

A miniature oil painting by UK artist, Joyce Rowsell.  It measures 3 1/4" x 4 1/4" and the modern gold tone wood frame is 4 1/2" x 5 1/2". 

Biography:
Thirty-four years ago, Joyce Rowsell joined the Hilliard Society of Wells in Somerset and has been painting miniatures in oil on silk ever since. She was elected President of this internationally known society in June 2015.
She soon began showing her work in the ‘Million Brushstrokes’ Exhibitions at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery in London. She has shown with them every year and has been the lucky recipient of many of their generous awards. She has also taken part in other exhibitions in galleries in London, Bristol, Windsor, Tavistock, and USA and carried out portraits and other commissions for private patrons.
In October 2010 she was asked to take part in an Exhibition at St Paul’s Cathedral in London, to celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the Cathedral three hundred years ago. This ran from 20th Sept. to 15th Oct.
She also showed at the New Orleans Gallery, Twickenham, London (2nd Oct. – 23rd Jan. 2010) in the Making it/ Faking it Exhibition.
Galleries in the USA have shown and sold her work and also the Miniature Art Society of Florida, the Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers of Washington DC, Cider Painters of America and the New Mexico Miniature Art Society. Over the years she has received 94 prizes and awards for miniature painting from various Societies and Galleries in England and the USA. As a result she was elected a ‘Miniature Artist of America’ in 2006. This is an honour given to:-
“Outstanding Practitioners in the field of American Miniaturism who are consistent award winners in major Miniature Art Competitions.
Joyce is also very proud of being a full member of the Royal Miniature Society and has thrice been runner up for the Gold Bowl there in 2005, 2006 and 2011. Also in 2006 she was very proud to receive the President’s Prize. In 2007 she was delighted to win the Llewellyn Alexander Award, and in 2010 the Peter Charles Booth Memorial Award: a lovely silver plaque given by Rosmar Booth.
The very successful Royal Miniature Society Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London is held in October. Information can be obtained from the Executive Secretary Claire Hucker 01454 269268.
The Miniature Artists of America, the Dutch Foundation of Miniature Art, The Hilliard Society and the Miniature Art Society of Florida and the Lee Collection have all bought examples of Joyce’s work for their Permanent Collections.
“Who’s Who in Art” has included her since 1996. The “Cambridge Dictionary of International Biography” and the Cambridge ‘Blue Book’ have also included her details for some years.
Articles about her, and reproductions of her paintings have appeared in the “Somerset Magazine”; “Somerset Life“; “West Country Life”, the “Artist” magazine (UK) and the “Countryman”.
For her external History of Art Degree from London University, Joyce revised her French and learned Italian. Her main subjects were ‘17th Century Baroque Painting’ and ‘18th Century English Architecture‘. These subjects she thoroughly enjoyed.
