On our spring trip to the Outer Banks area, we were delighted to be able to spend several days visiting the 1800’s era Island Farm on Roanoke Island. This living history farm is a wonderful place to see. The farm has old, restored buildings, historic breeds of livestock, antique furnishings and farming implements. A friend’s family was gracious enough to dress in historic era garb and model for me in various places around the farm. They fed chickens, used the ancient oak swing, watered the gardens, visited with the sweet old cow Rosie, played old games of the era, and simply had fun pretending to live in the old days of farming on the island. What a fun afternoon we had! I have many reference images, and memories to last a lifetime.

This is Lacey, dressed in a patterned old-style dress and an apron. My favorite part of the old antique apron is the patch. Everything was always worn till it was patched together by threads. The interiors of the Island Farm buildings are full of lovely antiques and vintage tools reminiscent of the era. Lacey is pouring water for a morning ritual, in front of an open window with a gauzy curtain blowing. A simple life.
