We visited Island Farms during a reference gathering trip this past spring to the Outer Banks.
The beautiful farm is a living history site depicting the daily life on Roanoke Island in the mid-1800’s. The lovely buildings and site is lovingly restored in a quiet setting surrounded by towering oaks and productive fields. Reenactors depict what life was like, educating visitors about the traditional farming, raising families, and tending livestock. Actual heritage breeds of chickens, a delightful cow, Island horses, and colorful sheep populate the farm.
This painting reflects some of the simple fall bounty harvested from typical crops, including sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin, garlic, and dill in a simple window setting. I added a bluebird just for fun, because they do seem to be a symbol of happiness.
