On our spring trip to the Outer Banks area, we were delighted to be able to spend several days visiting the 1800’s era Island Farm on Roanoke Island. This living history farm is a wonderful place to see. The farm has old restored buildings, historic breeds of livestock, including two Banker ponies, Rainbow and Grace.
A friend’s family was gracious enough to dress in historic era garb, and model for me in various places around the farm. They fed chickens, used the ancient oak swing, watered the gardens, visited with the sweet, pretty cow Rosie, played old games of the era, and simply had fun pretending to live in the old days of farming on the island. What a blast we had! I have many reference images for future painting ideas, and memories to last a lifetime.

I loved the sweet personalities of the Banker ponies, Grace & Rainbow, and paired one with this sweet young lady, Remi, to make a painting that shows the connection that children and ponies have. I see a soft touch, a warm, velvety muzzle, and a little treat of corn from a gourd that was raised on the farm.
