Along the Croatan Sound in Manteo, NC is The Island Farm. In 1847, Adam Etheridge IV and his family lived on the farm. They performed harrowing rescues as members of the United States Life-Saving Service on Roanoke Island. They also assisted the Wright Brothers in their dream of achieving powered flight. The Etheridge family raised chickens, fished in the sounds, and ground the corn they grew in a windmill. Corn, peas and potatoes were the main crops.

I was inspired to paint this, the family garden. Today, it is tended to by historians who demonstrate 19th century life at this living museum.

Can you imagine what life would be like without your local grocery store? If I had to grow all my own food, I might starve.
