The Herring Gulls depicted in this painting are common sights on the beaches of North Carolina.

One might expect to encounter them while strolling on the beach. A mating pair of these birds will pick a nesting site together, usually next to a log or rock for protection. The nest will commonly have 2 to 4 eggs and these clever birds can be expected to live up to 30 years.
