Colonial Militia is an original oil painting by Linda Wacaster.  The art measures 12″ x 9" and  the  frame is  13 1/4" x 10 1/4", frame included.

Males between the age of 16 and 60 were expected to serve in one of the militia companies and receive military training.  They had to furnish their own arms and armor.  They were not soldiers and needed to be trained in using the weapons of the day, swords, pikes and muskets.

This young man is carrying his musket and pike.  He is wearing a bandolier strap and what looks to be little wooden bottles hanging from it.  These bottles contained the exact amount of powder for one shot from the musket.  They were called apostles.  A bandolier had twelve apostles attached.
