Artist Bonnie Latham

While Bonnie Latham was painting art to get ready for The Wonderful World of Wildlife event that is going on right now at Seaside Art Gallery, we found her in her studio and asked her a few questions about her career as an artist.

Here’s a look at a fun one-to-one chat with Bonnie.

How long have you been painting?

“Ever since I could remember!”

What is your favorite animal to paint, and why?

“I love them all. I'd have to say owls are amazing. Their eyes are so captivating.”

Where is a favorite place you’ve traveled to see wildlife?

“It’s hard to pick just one. I love birds. So, along the flyway is really neat to observe them migrating. I've enjoyed visiting the East coast, the Teton area, and Florida.”

Why do you make this type of art? Why are you drawn to this subject?

“I am a very detailed oriented person. Working with watercolors allows me to depict the detail and depth I'm looking to achieve with my work.

“Growing up we were always outside with nature. Camping, hiking, skiing, photography etc. We would frequently be working with the raptor center or nature center. So, it's kinda in my blood.”

What does your artwork represent? Does your art represent something about you?

“We work from our own references. So, being there observing the animals in person. My experiences.”

What inspires you? What connection do you have to your art?

“My love of animals is the easy answer. My connection would also be the feel of it, details, the light and mood as well.”

What does your art mean to you?

“My art is a part of who I am. It just is.”

What art do you most identify with?

“Something that draws you in and good design flow.

“As in artists, I'm inspired by. (Johannes) Vermeer is a main one.”

What work do you most enjoy doing?

“I really enjoy the highly detailed part, and just playing with color.”

Rebecca Latham is in her studio surrounded by the artwork she’s creating. Her favorite household cat is curled up next to her keeping her warm... with a rolling purr. With her paintings in sight, you can feel the knobby pines, the downy swans, and the wiry coat on the fox kit as she brings them to life on canvas.

It is in this setting that Rebecca shares the journey that brought her here.
