It’s natural to desire making everyday tasks more fun by expressing yourself. Many people who work or study like to personalize their desks with plants, tabletop desk games, and even original desk art. But do those things distract you from getting tasks done, or can art on your desk actually make you more productive? According to Dr. Craig Knight and his team at the University of Exeter in England, having art on your desk can increase productivity up to fifteen percent! That number doubles if you get to choose what kind of art to have in your workplace. “If you enrich a space people feel much happier and work better,” said Dr. Craig. “A very good way of doing this is by using art.”
Even if you aren’t in a work or school environment where it’s practical to display your own art, you’ll still enjoy the same effect by having it on your desk at home.
Dr. Craig points out that any kind of art creates the same benefits as long as you enjoy it. It also provides a positive effect on your coworkers, study partners, and clients. Not sure where to start? Here are good guidelines to follow if you’re choosing art for your desk.
Most of us are well aware that extensive computer work causes mental fatigue and eyestrain. A bold colored painting can help solve this problem by drawing your eyes to it and giving them a welcome screen break without getting up from your chair. It’s a sight for sore eyes!
Sculptures of bronze, wood and even glass are classy additions of complementary texture in your desk decor. Your mind employs all five senses when you’re thinking, so why not assist in that through your desk art? You can even build a clever theme around your art pieces to help break the ice in that next client meeting.
When choosing art for your desk, it’s important of course to take into account who will most likely be present around your desk area. But it’s also important to remember that art is a personal experience, and you are the one who will spend the most time at it. No matter what piece you choose, make sure it is something that inspires you and makes you happy. In their studies, Dr Craig and his team discovered that positive, thought-provoking pieces helped workers make better decisions, employ critical thinking skills, and open their minds to diverse ways of solving problems.
From miniature art to desktop sculptures, Seaside Art Gallery has thousands of original art pieces to suit every taste. It’s the perfect place to find those finishing touches to make your workplace your own. Chart your course to get more productive with beautiful art to express yourself!
