Island Farm in North Carolina has a rich history that began in 1757 when Adam Etheridge leased 1,500 acres on the north end of Roanoke Island to farm and range his livestock. Adam's son Jesse bought 150 acres of this same land, and it is "Island Farm" today, owned for over 200 years by the Etheridge family. They were self sufficient islanders who fished, farmed and worked the land for two centuries. Four generations lived on the property. Adam Etheridge IV was 55 years old in 1868 when he died here.
The family helped in rescues with the US Life Saving Service, and they assisted the Wright Brothers. They raised horses, chickens and cattle. They grew peas, potatoes, and corn that they ground at the windmill. If you visit Island Farm, you will meet the current residents - two Corolla wild horses and some award winning purebred chickens.
The 11th generation of Ethridges still call Roanoke Island home.
