Love is a word that is used casually these days. In the 1970's to 1990's, it was reserved for family members and friends we knew at a deep level. In the 2020's, hearts are flying around social media, kiss emoji's accompany texts and you hear strangers on zoom calls saying they love you. Love is being shared more than ever, and that's such a good thing.

Still, I've been to Japan a few times, and I really appreciate what they do. They have three different ways to say I love you, in  a tiered sort of way. There's:

  • Aishiteru (愛してる) – I love you.
  • Daisuki (大好き) – I really like you.
  • Suki (好き) – I like you.

We've conflated them all in America, and that's fine. But there are still those in my life who get the aishiteru as opposed to the suki or the daisuki.
