Moser Glass History
Blanks were furnished by Harrachov, Loetz and Meyr’s Neffe. In 1893, Moser expanded his operations to include a glass factory. Moser quickly gained a reputation as one of the foremost makers of crystal in the Austrian-Hungarian empire. In 1900, Moser and his sons Gustave and Rudolph incorporated as Ludwig Moser & Söhne. The company supplied products to a variety of monarchs such as Emperor Franz Joseph and King Edward VII of England. When Ludwig Moser died in 1916, he was succeeded by Leo Moser.
By the early 1920s, Moser was the largest Czechoslovakian manufacturer of high-end decorative and drinking glassware. In addition to tabletop wares, Moser manufactured art glass. Famous designers, many associated with the Wiener Workstätte, included Johann Hoffman, Rudolf Miller, and Joseph Urban. A wide variety of decorative patterns were produced including cameo glass, color glass with classical scenes, enamel work, and intaglio cuts.
Leo and Richard Moser purchased Meyr’s Neffe, its biggest Bohemian competitor, in 1922. Leo and remaining members of the Moser family fled Czechoslovakia following the annexation by Germany in 1938. The company was nationalized during the communist era.
The company developed a lead-free sodium potassium glass formula that is as hard as lead glass but more eco-friendly. The company continues in operation producing art engravings, crystal gifts, crystal prizes and trophies, decorative objects, drinking sets, and lighting. Ref: Worthpoint
