In the U.S. Navy and maritime tradition, the “First Dog Watch” is a two-hour watch period from 4:00 PM (16:00) to 6:00 PM (18:00), splitting the standard 4 PM to 8 PM block with the "Last Dog Watch" (6 PM to 8 PM) to stagger watch rotations, ensuring fairness and preventing monotony by preventing the same crew from always taking the unpopular mid-watch. 

 Watch System Breakdown
The 24-hour day is typically divided into seven watches, including the dog watches: 

 Morning Watch: 04:00 – 08:00 (4 AM – 8 AM)

Forenoon Watch: 08:00 – 12:00 (8 AM – Noon)

Afternoon Watch: 12:00 – 16:00 (Noon – 4 PM)

**First Dog Watch: 16:00 – 18:00 (4 PM – 6 PM)

Last Dog Watch: 18:00 – 20:00 (6 PM – 8 PM)

First Watch: 20:00 – Midnight (8 PM – Midnight)

Middle Watch: Midnight – 04:00 (Midnight – 4 AM)
