In Elizabeth City, there is the second largest U.S. Coast Guard air base. I was privileged to tour it. In the room where the rescue swimmers work, I was struck by three things. 1. All of the swimmers have very obvious upper body strength and musculature, obviously from being excellent strong swimmers. 2. The walls are lined with life vests that have writing on them, documenting the rescue teams and circumstances of each successful mission, where the vest was employed. 3. There is a well used sewing machine in the middle of the room. All of the rescue equipment is made of fabric. These big burly heroes - they need to have incredible sewing skills. Usually, we expect to see a demur, dainty person behind the sewing machine. NOT so in the USCG! They are in the business of saving lives with their sewing skills!
