Realism is a remarkable feat in the arts when you think about it. Somehow artists figured out how to transform globs of paint into scenes so realistic that you might be convinced you’re looking out a window. It’s an old art form - one that spans the course of centuries. Realism champions the beauty of everyday life. Unlike other genres of art, realism depicts the world as it exists and features it in its raw, natural beauty. Let’s see how realism does that and more in all its detailed splendor below.

Behold the Mute Swan’s majestic neck and royal red beak! Its soft, pillowy feathers serve an important job keeping the swan warm and afloat on the water in its natural habitat. Thanks to this realistic portrayal of the bird, you can admire its natural beauty any time you wish.
Summer may be getting started now, but sooner or later it will end and the school season will return once again. We love how this painting features a realistic coming of age story with symbolism. Two somber children look down at the sidewalk as the boy hangs onto what seems to be the last dandelion in his hands. Did you know that the last dandelion of the season can mean fleeting happiness and the passage of time in literature?
Mmm, who doesn’t like delicious golden honey? One squirrel dares to take a taste from the jar while its friend warily looks on. Maybe the grapes are a safer bet. They certainly look tasty, too. Their subtle reflection on the lacquered wooden table is an accurate depiction of a kitchen countertop. The gold frame completes the friendly warm toned scene.
This lovely vintage Fedoskino Russian Box depicts a fair Boyar maiden in realistic period accurate attire. She proudly stands on the porch of her house as a humble serf holds the door for her in admiration. A “Boyar” was a high ranking noble in the old feudal Russian monarchy that was only once removed from a prince. The box is beautifully trimmed with gilt floral bordering and luxurious red paint. Who knew that realism could be so exciting?
Does coming to the beach always remind you of salt water taffy? It does for Debra Kierce, as well as many others who visit the beautiful Outer Banks. This elegant piece is a handsome grown-up tribute to those fun summertime memories. The shine and transparency of the glass is so well painted you might be tricked into thinking that it’s real!

Maybe you’ve seen a miniature painting before, but have you witnessed a tiny sculpture or mini with three-dimensional details so small, you would find them with a magnifying glass?
