Had a tough day or need a moment of peace and quiet? Few things can beat the uplifting assurance of a happy horse on canvas. Horses have been our partners for thousands of years. They helped us settle lands, grow crops, fend off enemies, and deliver critical messages much faster than we ever could on foot alone. With the help of us humans, horses also reached remarkable heights. They’ve broken records, inspired nations, and stood by our side as beloved companions. Let’s consider these awesome things as we observe gorgeous horses in art.
This mare is so proud of her handsome son! Their rich chestnut coats shine in the sunlight on the lush grassy field. It should come as no surprise that this colt has long legs. The legs make up about 80% of a baby horse’s body. All baby horses are called foals, with the male being called a colt. A female baby horse is a filly.
Horses are remarkably intuitive creatures. If you’ve ever watched a horse movie before, you probably saw horses communicate with people and other animals almost entirely with body language. No matter what you tell a horse to do, it will pick up how you really feel on the inside and respond to you accordingly. That’s why it’s a special treasure when a person earns the trust of a horse.
Wow, just look at the magnificent detail on these horses! They lift their heads into the breeze with almost as much grandeur as George Washington crossing the Delaware River. What are they savoring in the wind? Is it the smell of sweet grass on the other side? Is it the wild, crisp bite of the mountain air? Or is it the scent of something or someone familiar to them, an old friend? Whatever it is, something important is definitely just up ahead in the wind.
As the name of the painting implies, there’s something curious about this group of horses standing and staring in the forest meadow. They have no saddles on! Are they domestic horses released in an enclosed tract of land, or are they wild? Whoever these chestnuts are, they certainly appear interested in the viewer admiring their beauty!
In the days before cars populated the road, horses were vital players in transportation. If you planned to travel by carriage or buggy, your horses needed to match each other in strength in order to pull the load safely. This holds true with carriage horses today. These hard-working horses may be diverse in color and size, but their strength is evenly matched. One brief look will tell you they’ve done this plenty of times before. They’re a perfect pair for the job!
Anytime you purchase a piece of art that features a horse during Seaside Art Gallery’s Animals in Art Show, a portion of the purchase is donated to help domestic animals on the Outer Banks in need. You can see more horses and other animals in the Art Show here. This event is only available for a limited time though, so if you want to be a hero for animals, you need to act fast before this special Art Show is over!

Floral art makes a beautiful impact for people all over the world. It’s more than just a decoration on the wall, it’s a meaningful and personal bridge to nature for the viewer. Florals do far more than sit pretty on your bookshelf.
