US commemorative coins; oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings; murals; congressional medals; bronze, wood, marble and porcelain sculpture have all been a part of the art career of Chester Martin. He went to University of Chattanooga, worked in graphic design and began painting watercolors winning regional and national awards. Curiosity about three-dimensional art caused him to enter several medallic competitions in the early 80’s, winning all.
Martin worked at the US Mint in Philadelphia. His creative works included the Andrew Wyeth and General Colin Powell congressional medals. Martin designed the reverse side of the White House Bicentennial silver dollar in 1992. Examples of his medals, done both privately and for the US Government, are in collections in the Smithsonian, British Museum, Royal Swedish Coin Cabinet and FAO, Rome. His “Sixty Day” bronze relief is permanently placed in Brookgreen Gardens, South Carolina.
