Johann Wilhelm Weinmann, 1683 – 1741. He was a German pharmacist and botanist. He produced Phytanthoza iconographia, 8 folio volumes with over 1,000 hand-colored engravings of 1,000’s of plants. The first artist he employed was Georg Dionysius Ehret, who became one of the foremost floral illustrators. Phytanthoza iconographia was published in Dutch, Latin and German editions. Some of the Weinmann illustrations were the source for Honzô zufu, the Japanese botanical work by Iwasaki Tsunemasa. This book describes and illustrates 2000 plants, and is an important treatise on systematic botany in the Tokugawa period.
