Marc Chagall, 1887 – 1985. Born in Russia, Chagall was one of the masters of 20th century art. He employed a dynamic union of symbol and fantasy to create art which expressed the range of human emotion from joy to despair. Fantasy art was based on the belief that the imagination or “inner eye” is more important than the outside world. In the early 20th century, fantasy was thought of as mysterious and profound, not the lighthearted and superficial view that we think of it today. His art was created in many mediums including oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, etchings, lithographs and stain glass. His art is in museum collections worldwide. “If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.” Marc Chagall, McMullen, The World of Marc Chagall (1968).
