Artists have painted with oils since the 7th century, but it wasn’t until the 15th century that Flemish painters discovered new ways to master the illusion of light with the medium. Majestic and awe-inspiring, Pattee Hipschen enjoys expressing light in her oil paintings. She teaches painting and printmaking at the Arts Club of Washington and through the Art League School in Alexandria, Virginia.
“Color and light have always been central to my work. I explore how light shapes and defines form, using it as a guiding element in every painting,” explains Pattee. “I’m inspired daily by nature and the beauty found in deep wooded landscapes, winding coastal waterways, and dramatic cloud formations.”
The special thing about sunsets in Reykjavik and other Iceland towns is that they only set “normally” in the Fall and Spring. There is only 4-5 hours of daylight in the Winter, and in the Summer it does not set at all! This lovely oil painted Spring sunset over a field of flowers shows the rich purples and crisp greens of the Arctic region in full display.
A kaleidoscope of color bursts forth from the rising sun through the trees, greeting a new day. “I’m especially drawn to the way sunlight filters through trees, creating diamond-like bursts of color in the negative spaces,” Pattee says. We love how the golden frame brings out the vibrant color palette in the painting’s center.

This unique diptych displays the ocean’s tranquility with twice the soothing power. Its clever name prompts happy memories of a beach walk. The evening sun’s twilight glow illuminates the sky and the water with cool tones and wide open seas, creating a sense of calm and eternity that spans across light and space.
A congregation of black-eyed susans reach for the sun and welcome a new day of hope. We love how the susans are nestled into the safety of the green branches filled with life and vigor. This piece is the perfect way to spruce up a neutral toned room or office with a pop of color that puts a smile on your face any time of day.
Look how the fire from the sun kisses the horizon as the clouds dance with the sky over the water in this breathtaking piece. Pattee enjoys painting in her distinct style of bright and intense color with her oil paintings. “I also love capturing the ever-changing sky and the reflections it casts on water at sunrise or sunset—fleeting moments of transformation and beauty,” says Pattee.
Pattee Hipschen is passionate about continuing the rich Master Artist tradition of painting with oil. She has exhibited her work for over 30 years and eagerly shares her love for art with everyone she meets and teaches. Come see her pieces at The Modern Masters Event: The Edge of Light, an exclusive art show hosted by Seaside Art Gallery!

Sometimes, depicting the mastery of light and shadow in art isn’t as serious as a Rembrandt. It can be fun, too! Tony Craig’s artistic vision reveals a memorable impression about light.

Lori loves to paint the wonders of natural light. One of her fondest memories is sitting at the kitchen table as a young girl while her great-grandmother showed her how to expertly draw life around her.
