Many folks know about the famous wild horses of Corolla, but have you heard about their southern cousins? The Ocracoke Banker Ponies are some of the island’s oldest residents. It is believed that these gentle souls came from the equine survivors of shipwrecks long ago and have lived there ever since. After the highway was built in 1957, the National Park Service decided to fence their grassy pastures in order to protect the ponies from the road, and they have been caring for the ponies ever since.
