It’s a rare treat to slow down and allow your mind to ponder these days. Deep thinking helps us connect more with our long term memory. World Mental Health Day may have already passed, but October is still Emotional Wellness Month which makes it a great time to pause and reflect. Go ahead and let your mind wander with this gorgeous array of thought-provoking still life!
How much fruit do you think should be in this painting? Think carefully. Don’t worry, we won’t spoil the answer for you! We will say, however, that the colorful blush of the lush green pears is lovely. Their smooth flesh provides a contrast to their rugged woody stems that is easy on the eyes. The painting’s small stature provides pleasant personal viewing on an office desk or a dresser.
Would you ever expect a history lesson from a painting? We didn’t either. This piece tells the story of the Medicis, a powerful family in Florence, Italy. The canister and the coin symbolize their success as merchants and bankers. The Medicis revered the arts and often funded artists and museums. Their dedication paved the way to the Renaissance, which could be symbolized by the “R” on the book. Being poets themselves, the Medicis supported Michalangelo, Donatello, Galileo, and other Old Masters. It didn’t last forever, however. The candle likely represents their bright light in Italy that eventually faded away in 300 years.
Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Here we see a bird cage carefully wrapped in a blanket, but there appears to be no adult bird inside. Instead, we see a lone nest of eggs as its only residents. No one knows if a human is present, either. This raises a lot of questions for the viewer. Who was the mother? What happened to her? And who took them in? What do the eggs mean? Well, they seem to be well cared for at least. Let’s hope they aren’t alone for long.
We love still life that has their own little artworks inside them! Simple but sweet, this etching captures a lovely bouquet of red flowers, but this time it’s from the artist’s perspective. We not only get to see the flowers, we get to see how they are painted, too. Aptly named, this piece is a gentle reminder to appreciate the quiet but beautiful things in life.

Oil paints, watercolor, acrylic, gouache… There’s a lot to consider when an artist gets ready to make a painting. Often, the creation of a painting begins long before the artist brushes the first stroke on the canvas.
Christmas tree ornament collecting is a longstanding holiday tradition. Each ornament can remind someone of a significant memory as they hang it on the tree year after year. Ornaments are an excellent and affordable gifting idea.
Few paintings can capture the wonder and excitement of the natural world like that of Lee Mims. Filled with vibrancy, movement and rich colors, her paintings spring to life and capture the viewer’s imagination.
